Cancer Center and Radiotherapy Building Project, Vachira Phuket Hospital

            The number of cancer patients and cancer-related deaths continues to rise each year. Alongside surgery and chemotherapy, radiation therapy is a critical treatment option thatsignificantly improves patients’ chances of recovery and enhances their quality of life.

            Currently, Vachira Phuket Hospital handles approximately 1,200 new cancer cases annually from Phuket, Phang-Nga, and Krabi, with this number steadily increasing. About half of these patients require radiation therapy. However, access to public healthcare facilities offering radiation therapy in Southern Thailand is limited to the Gulf of Thailandside, specifically in Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Songkhla.

            Although healthcare funding schemes help cover treatment costs, patients must bear other related expenses. This financial strain has forced many cancer patients to discontinue their treatment, compromising their health outcomes.

            In the 2025 fiscal year, Vachira Phuket Hospital received budgetary support from the Ministry of Public Health to acquire two critical medical devices: a 4D high-energy linear accelerator for radiation therapy and a Computerized Tomography for simulation and treatment planning.
The procurement and funding process must be finalized by September 2026.

            To accommodate and install the radiation therapy equipment, a dedicated facility meeting stringent standards must be constructed and completed by June 2026 to allow sufficient time for installation, system testing, and final acceptance. At present, none of the hospital’s existing buildings are structurally suitable for housing the radiation therapy equipment. Moreover,
no budget has been allocated for construction of such specialized facility.

Vachira Phuket Hospital has initiated a fundraising project to construct a dedicated Radiotherapy Building and further develop it into a comprehensive cancer treatment center. The project aims to provide timely, safe, and efficient cancer care, improving patients’ survival rates, enhancing their quality of life, and reducing the financial strain of traveling to distant treatment facilities.

            The planned Cancer and Radiotherapy Center will be a 6.5-story building situated on donated land along Pracha-Uthit Road in Ratsada Subdistrict, Mueang District, Phuket Province, approximately 4 kilometers from Vachira Phuket Hospital. The construction will
be entirely funded by donations, with a projected budget of THB 290 million.
